Dr. Paul Bernstein
Dr. Paul Bernstein is a graduate of the University of California, San Diego. He completed his residency in Head and Neck Surgery at University Hospital in San Diego and is a fellow in both the American College of Surgeons and American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery. Dr. Bernstein was chief and Regional chief for Head and Neck Surgery, and now serves as Area Medical Director of San Diego. He started the Kaiser Permanente Historical Society to help preserve Kaiser Permanente’s unique history and culture. He has been chairman of the Head and Neck Division of the American Cancer Society (ACS) since 1987 and is a member of the organization’s board of directors.
Dr. Bernstein has published numerous scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, and has written seven novels. Courage to Heal, his novel based on Sidney Garfield, the doctor who started Kaiser Permanente and changed American Medicine, has won several awards, including the London Book Festival, the San Francisco Book Awards, the New England Book Awards, and the San Diego Book Awards. His most recent novel, Flashblind, will be released by ZOVA Books in early 2012.
Dr. Bernstein lives in Southern California with his wife, Judy, who also writes – most recently recognized for her authorship of They Poured Fire On Us From the Sky, about three “Lost Boys” of the Sudan whom Dr. and Mrs. Bernstein have worked with in San Diego.
